Notary Public
A notary public is an officer of the law appointed to authenticate documents, usually albeit not invariably, for use in foreign countries. Accordingly, if you undertake personal or commercial transactions internationally, odds are that sooner or later you will require a notary’s services.
Examples of situations where the services of a notary public may be required include:
- Administering oaths and declarations (especially in respect of documents for use in foreign Courts);
- The authentication of documents for use overseas including the following:
- Documents necessary to open a foreign bank or trading account;
- Original degree certificates and academic records for use overseas;
- Documents necessary to complete the sale and purchase of property overseas;
- Documents necessary to apply for powers of attorney for use overseas; and
- Documents to obtain replacement foreign passports.
Prior to witnessing and sealing a document, a notary public is required to secure and keep copies of identity. Therefore, when calling to avail the services of a notary public you should ensure that you have a passport and/or a driver’s licence.
